Chateau Pontet-Canet Vertical Tasting – 30 April 2022

This 80-ha vineyard next to Ch Mouton-Rothschild produces wines in a style so typical of a great Pauillac : big and chewy, with blackcurrent and sweet tobacco flavours. It is the only Classed Growth in Bordeaux that is farmed biodynamically, and recently the prices have gone through the roof.

 

Pontet-Canet is not at its best in its youth due to the tight tannic structure and dense concentration of the wine – with experts recommending a drinking window of 15-45 years.  The 6 wines in our line-up are all at the apex of drinkability, the 1990 now having enjoyed 32 years of maturation.

Let’s explore the history, the place, the winemaking and the philosophy of this historic and important Chateau, while tasting some of the best vintages of a decade that produced incredible quality in Bordeaux.
